Van Straten Medical was the first company to introduce disposable pre-evacuated wound drainage systems worldwide. The pre-evacuated drainage systems provide constant suction.
The aim is to create a controlled vacuum inside the wound. A constant vacuum inside the wound promotes optimal wound healing. The constant vacuum continually works to draw the wound tissue and wound clefts together.
Based on the literature it can be concluded that continuity of the vacuum level is important, even the level of vacuum itself. Intermittent drainage systems should be abandoned.
For the majority of the surgeries closed suction drainage shows to be beneficial. Low vacuum drainage is used in most surgeries where drainage is used and may be the preferred method.
When low vacuum is used, the debate may arise that intermittent devices or bellow systems could cause leakage around the drain. As intermittent devices need to be re-activated adequately and immediately, it will lead to discontinuation of the drainage process. This may lead to increased risks of leakage around the drain.
A pre-evacuated low vacuum system (LVS) with a constant suction could prevent this problem.
