VAN DONOR™ NAAR DONEREN.
DONOR™ heeft de afgelopen jaren als bloedretransfusiesysteem bekendheid gekregen in Nederland maar ook in vele andere landen waaronder de Verenigde Staten. Doneren staat synoniem voor geven, of dit nu bloed is of anderszins. In dit licht is de Stichting ‘The DONOR Foundation’ in de zomer van 2006 opgericht.
Een bloedretransfusie systeem zoals DONOR™ zorgt ervoor dat een patiënt na bijvoorbeeld een orthopedische ingreep, zijn/haar eigen bloed terugkrijgt.
Ziekenhuizen in derde wereldlanden hebben met grote regelmaat geen geld beschikbaar voor de aanschaf van bloedretransfusiesystemen terwijl daar nu juist de nood enorm hoog is vanwege de slechte kwaliteit van besmet bloedbankbloed (HIV, Malaria, Hepatitis). De DONOR Foundation is onder meer actief in Afrika met het schenken van gratis ‘DONOR autoloog bloedretransfusiesystemen’.
De fondsenwerving voor de DONOR Foundation vindt op drie manieren plaats:
1. Van ieder wereldwijd verkocht DONOR systeem schenkt Van Straten Medical een vast bedrag aan de DONOR foundation;
2. Bijdragen van particulieren;
3. Benefietevenementen.
In dit kader nodigen wij u, en uw genodigden, uit voor het spectaculaire Benefietgala in Sociëteit de Witte, Den Haag. Dit grootse evenement vindt plaats op vrijdag 6 juni a.s. Het evenement is mede tot stand gekomen door een groot aantal vrijwilligers, internationale organisaties en de Engelstalig R.C. Church of Our Saviour. Door een galakaart te kopen draagt u direct bij aan het goede doel.
De opbrengsten van het gala wordt o.a. gebruikt om DONOR™ autoloog bloedretransfusiesystemen te schenken in Zuid Afrika. De DONOR Foundation heeft in februari j.l. systemen overhandigd aan het Tygerberg Ziekenhuis in Kaapstad. Meer over de DONOR Foundation, haar projecten maar ook het gala leest u in de bijlage. Ziektes die worden overgebracht door bloedtransfusies zijn een groeiend (wereld) probleem aan het worden. HIV, Creutzfeld-Jacob, Hepatitis B, C, and the West Nile virus zijn voorbeelden hiervan. Een bloed retransfusie systeem recyclet, na bijvoorbeeld een orthopedische ingreep, het eigen bloed van de patiënt. Hiermee wordt voorkomen dat potentieel besmet bloed uit de bloedbank wordt gegeven. Bovendien is er geen gevaar meer om verkeerd bloed terug te geven, de patiënt herstelt sneller en er wordt een oplossing geboden voor het wereldwijde probleem van teruglopende bloedvoorraad.
Stichting the DONOR Foundation is opgericht door Stan Jesmiatka, M.D., mr. Wil Wouters en Bart van Straten, M.B.A., M.I.T. De stichting houdt zich bezig met diverse ontwikkelingen op het gebied van autoloog bloedretransfusie.

DONOR Foundation handover DONOR systems to Tygerberg hospital, South Africa.
During an official handing over ceremony on February 26, 2008, a representative of the DONOR Foundation handed over 100 DONOR Autologous Reinfusion Systems to the Tygerberg Hospital.
The hospital has approximately 100 Total Knee procedures per year. The systems stimulate new measures of preventing the transmission of blood transfusion diseases by blood transfusions and stimulate the development of blood saving devices for both emergency and operating theatre cases.
These systems will be used in combination with total knee replacement surgery, where patient’s would alternatively have received potentially contaminated blood bank blood, now allowing for the return of their own blood following this type of surgery. With the ever present danger of transmittable diseases through blood bank blood and the shortage of bank blood, The DONOR system is a unique disposable system to recycle the patient’s own blood after surgery, thus avoiding the said dangers. The DONOR system is considered by many, as a break through in the growing global blood problem. Bank blood stock, is not only decreasing rapidly due to lack of donors it also gets further contaminated with new and unknown diseases. Transfusion-transmitted diseases through bank blood are an ever-growing global problem, in developing countries as well as in the western world. HIV, Creutzfeld-Jacob, Hepatitis B, C, Malaria and the West Nile virus are examples and often lead to chaotic circumstances when needed for patients. A number of hospitals in South Africa, as well as a growing number of hospitals globally are using the, DONOR System, to prevent virus contamination, allow for quicker wound healing, thus shortened hospital stay, but moreover, it saves high costs associated with bank blood.
DONOR Foundation, was founded on the initiative of Stan Jesmiatka, M.D., mr. Wil Wouters and Bart van Straten, M.B.A., M.I.T.
They achieve their goals by:
Donating these units free of charge
Supplying financial support to selected research projects
Sending people to various countries to inform local hospitals about these possibilities

On Friday 6 June the DONOR Foundation organizes a benefit gala in Societet de Witte in co-operation with the R.C. Church of our Saviour in The Hague. The main objective of the gala is to raise funds for various benificiaries supported by the hosts.
The systems are donated to the DONOR Foundation against the lowest possible costs by Van Straten Medical, manufacturer of the system.
